A sign “Medieval Castle Lucardo” on
the paved road winding above vineyards and olive groves points
to a dirt road winding up between cypress trees to a small piazza
just below the castle. There the Romanesque church of San Martino
contains a Ghirlandaio alterpiece and other mid-XV-century Florentine
works attributed to Perugino.
From the piazza a private road curves up
further along the high walls of the castle’s fortifications
to the summit where “Castellino Lucardo” guards its
ancient portal arch dated back to Etruscan times.
