Luxury Tuscan Rental

“Castellino Lucardo” towers four-stories high next to the arched entrance to a 14th-century hilltop castle, in the Tuscan countryside southwest of Florence.

Its commanding height provides uninterrupted views to all points of the compass including the towers of San Gimignano, the Florentine hills, the Tyrrhenian Sea and southern Appenine mountains above Pisa. Its three-year renovation was completed in May 2007 under the supervision of the Italian government’s Office of Protection for historical and artistic monuments.

The owner has opened the residence for monthly rental from June through September 2007.

A sign “Medieval Castle Lucardo” on the paved road winding above vineyards and olive groves points to a dirt road winding up between cypress trees to a small piazza just below the castle. There the Romanesque church of San Martino contains a Ghirlandaio alterpiece and other mid-XV-century Florentine works attributed to Perugino.

From the piazza a private road curves up further along the high walls of the castle’s fortifications to the summit where “Castellino Lucardo” guards its ancient portal arch dated back to Etruscan times.
